NEW Z.ONE ULTRA FROM ZONARE PRODUCES OVER NINETY PERCENT LESS GREENHOUSE GAS THAN CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS
World’s First Convertible Ultrasound™ System Saves Hundreds of Dollars Annually
Mountain View, Calif. – May 8,2007 – ZONARE Medical Systems, a developer of next generation ultrasound technology, recently introduced the z.one ultra system, the latest in its line of Convertible Ultrasound™ platforms. Based on revolutionary Zone Sonography™ technology, ZONARE engineers estimate the z.one ultra system produces over ninety percent less greenhouse gas than other conventional, cart-based ultrasound systems and saves hundreds of dollars in energy costs each year.
The z.one ultra uses significantly less power than conventional cart-based ultrasound systems,” said Glen McLaughlin, PhD, vice president of engineering and chief technical officer for ZONARE. “The need for less power results in a dramatic reduction in heat generation leading to substantially lower air conditioning use. This means not only decreased emissions of green house gas, but also greater energy cost savings for our customers.”
According to McLaughlin, because the z.one ultra system consumes less than one-tenth the power and requires a fraction of the air conditioning, the typical energy costs for running the z.one ultra system per year is approximately $50. A conventional cart-based system, however, can cost around $620 to support annually due to significantly greater power consumption and air conditioning requirements.
Impact on the environment is also critical. As more scientific reports emerge, the evidence is overwhelming and undeniable that global warming is real, it is already happening and it is the result of human activities – not a natural occurrence. Such activities as the emission of greenhouse gas from power-hungry appliances or devices like ultrasound systems have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere causing temperatures to rise.
“Most conventional cart-based systems draw more than 1200 watts of power, produce more than 49,000 BTUs of heat and need almost 17,000 BTUs of air conditioning per day in order to function,” said McLaughlin. “This translates to emission of more than 2,200 pounds of greenhouse gas per year for these large, standard units. The z.one ultra system, which draws only 100 watts of power, emits just 185 pounds of greenhouse gas during the same time period. We believe we are helping our customers save hundreds of dollars in energy costs each year while contributing to the effort to reduce global warming.”
Representing one of the most significant ultrasound breakthroughs in decades, Zone Sonography technology has allowed ZONARE Medical Systems to bring the first Convertible Ultrasound platform to the industry with superb image quality at a superior price to value ratio. Clinicians are able to instantly convert the z.one platform from a full-featured, cart-based system into a premium compact, ultrasound system with all the performance of superior larger and more expensive ultrasound units, yet, with greater portability and clinical flexibility than conventional compact systems.
The z.one platform’s Zone Sonography software-based architecture ensures that its performance will increase as improvements in processing power become available. This allows for fast, convenient upgrades in clinical capabilities, keeping clinicians at the forefront of diagnostic capabilities as well as protecting their investment. Software upgrades can be downloaded via the internet.
Other environmentally-friendly features of the z.one ultra system include a far quieter system resulting in a reduction in ambient noise pollution. This means greater patient and user comfort. It is also a significantly lighter system, based primarily on a software architecture, which means far less use of natural resources and minimization of future recycling issues.
“We designed the z.one ultra system to provide maximum flexibility, scalability and value for our customers while supporting excellence in patient care,” said Donald Southard, president and CEO for ZONARE. “We were also mindful of our obligation to minimize customer operational costs and environmental impact overall. Consequently, we were able to develop a system with even better image quality, which our current customers can upgrade to easily and economically, while further minimizing green house gas emissions as well.”
